Candy Vela Journey: From Cancer Survival to a Life of Purpose, Faith, and Courage

There are moments in life when we realize that surviving is only the beginning.

My journey through cancer changed me in ways I never could have imagined. It challenged my body, my strength, my faith, and my perspective on what truly matters. But as I moved forward, I began to understand that my story was not meant to end with cancer. It was meant to become a story of hope, service, courage, and new beginnings.

Rebuilding Strength, One Step at a Time

After cancer, I worked hard and remained dedicated to rebuilding my strength. Little by little, I restored my mobility, regained confidence in my body, and returned to many of the CrossFit activities I had once loved.

It wasn't easy. There were days when my body reminded me of everything I had been through. But every small improvement felt like a victory.

About a year and eight months later, something else began to stir in my heart.

I felt called to give pillows to cancer patients.

People often asked me, “Why pillows?”

The answer was simple: my pillow had been a source of comfort and support throughout my own cancer journey. It helped me feel safe, comfortable, and a little less alone during some of the hardest moments of my life.

I wanted other patients to experience that same sense of comfort.

Returning to My Roots

I decided to return to my birth country, Guatemala, and booked a flight with a heart full of hope and a desire to serve.

While there, I connected with the La Liga Nacional contra el Cáncer https://share.google/0cbgSb26SPZxPTjS1 , where I found a community of patients who were facing many of the same fears, challenges, and uncertainties I had once experienced.

After meeting with the director and completing an interview, I was given the opportunity to serve the patients.

As I handed out the pillows and shared my story, I experienced God's grace, mercy, and humility in a way that is difficult to put into words.

I looked into the patients' eyes. I received their hugs. I heard their words of gratitude.

And my heart was overwhelmed.

That experience reminded me that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can carry the greatest meaning. A simple pillow cannot take cancer away, but it can provide comfort. It can remind someone that they are cared for. It can bring a moment of peace during an incredibly difficult season.

Most importantly, it can communicate one powerful message:

You are not alone.

Choosing to Live Again

After that experience, I decided it was time to live a little on the edge.

Cancer had taken so much from me, and I wanted to experience the adventures, traditions, and beautiful moments I had missed.

So I said yes to adventure.

I went rock climbing. I went ziplining. I spent precious time with my family. I immersed myself in the culture of my home country and created memories that I will carry with me forever.

Every moment felt like a celebration of life.

Returning to Guatemala wasn't just about reconnecting with my roots. It was about reconnecting with myself.

It reminded me that being alive is a blessing—and that life is meant to be experienced, celebrated, and shared with the people we love.

Showing Up for the CrossFit Open

When I returned home, I decided it was time to challenge myself again.

I signed up for the CrossFit Open.

Now, let's be honest—I wasn't doing everything exactly as prescribed. I had plenty of modifications, and that's okay.

My goal wasn't to be the strongest person in the room.

My goal was simply to show up and finish.

By the end of each workout, I felt like my lungs had submitted their resignation. I was pretty sure I had discovered muscles I never knew existed!

But I did it.

And more importantly, I felt like I belonged again.

I was surrounded by a community that celebrated every victory, no matter how big or small. They cheered for every modified movement, every difficult rep, and every step forward.

When I finally crossed the finish line and heard people calling my name and encouraging me every step of the way, I couldn't hold back the tears.

I cried tears of joy.

Friends surrounded me with hugs, kisses, and words of encouragement, and in that moment, I realized something profound:

I wasn't just finishing a workout. I was celebrating how far I had come.

Cancer had tried to define my story.

But cancer didn't get the final word.

Progress, Not Perfection

My journey has taught me that progress isn't about perfection.

Sometimes progress looks like completing a workout with modifications.

Sometimes it looks like getting out of bed on a difficult day.

Sometimes it looks like offering comfort to someone else when you know exactly what it feels like to need comfort yourself.

And sometimes progress simply means having the courage to keep showing up.

Every pillow I give.

Every patient I meet.

Every adventure I experience.

Every workout I finish.

Every tear I shed.

Every person who cheers me on.

They are all part of the same story

.

A story of survival.

A story of faith.

A story of resilience.

A story of choosing to live.

Wear the Message. Share the Mission.

This was the shirt I created for my first day back at CrossFit after my cancer journey.

I fought. I healed. I returned.

I chose those words because they represented exactly where I was in my life. I had fought one of the hardest battles, my body was still healing, and returning to CrossFit was another step toward finding myself again.

I wasn't returning as the same woman I was before cancer. I was returning with a different body, a different story, and a new kind of strength.

That day, this shirt wasn't just something I wore it was a reminder to myself:

I made it through. And I was back.

The Journey Is Still Going

The Cancer journey didn't end when treatment ended.

In many ways, that's when a new journey began.

A journey of rebuilding.

A journey of rediscovering joy.

A journey of serving others.

A journey of faith.

A journey of courage.

And a journey of learning to embrace every precious moment.

I don't know exactly where this road will take me next, but I know I want to keep moving forward.

I want to keep serving.

I want to keep inspiring.

I want to keep challenging myself.

And most of all, I want to keep living.

If my story can give even one person hope on a difficult day, then everything I have experienced has greater meaning.

Cancer may be part of my story, but it is not the end of my story.

This is my journey.

And my journey is still going.

A Message of Hope for Every Journey

Today, I share my story to inspire others facing breast cancer and anyone navigating a difficult season in life. Encouraging survivors to include rehabilitation and physical therapy as an important part of their recovery and reminds every one of the importance of listening to their bodies and seeking medical care when something doesn't feel right.

Through speaking openly about my experience, I hope to make a positive impact, raise awareness about breast cancer recovery, and reminder that healing is not always a straight line.

This message goes beyond cancer. It is about listening to your body, caring for yourself, embracing life, finding purpose in difficult experiences, and having the courage to keep moving forward.

Whether you are recovering from cancer, facing a personal challenge, or simply trying to find your strength again, I hope that me sharing my story reminds you:

You are stronger than you think. Your journey matters. And there is still so much life ahead of you.

Keep showing up. Keep believing. Keep moving forward.

Your story is still being written.
